October 14th 1964 the Nobel Peace prize was awarded to Martin Luther King Jr. At only 35 years old, the civil rights leader was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace prize to this point. The prize honors acts "for the furtherance of brotherhood among men and to the abolishment or reduction of standing armies and for the extension of these purposes."
The prize meant that King would be given about $54,000 that would be given to the civil rights movement. King said that he, with this prize, felt that the rest of the world were concerned about the problems in America and was glad. Also the American Ambassador in Oslo at the time, Miss Margaret Joy Tibbetts expressed joy and gratitude that one of her fellow countrymen had won the prize.
